TAMPA — Shaun Cooley and Scott Jankes staked their claim to being the best 6.5 combo at Hunter’s Green, crushing the field and going 3-0 to capture the abbreviated Combo Kickoff Classic Saturday morning.
Cooley and Jankes smacked around Alfonso Saa and Stephen Hunter in round 1 by an 8-2 score, and in round 2 took care of Erik Hajek and J.R. Daws 8-4.
That put them into what would end up being the final against the only other undefeated team, John Slatniske and Jimmy Dicesaro.
But after leading 1-0 and 40-15, Slats and Dice withered under the brutal Florida sun. Perhaps showing some effects from a 14-12 victory in the first round over Dave Mardo and James Okoh, the Slats/Dice combo faded.
Cooley and Jankes opened up a 4-1 lead, then 5-2 as the famous Slats serve nestled itself into the net one time too many times.
Cooley and Jankes won their three matches by a combined 24-8 score.
The only 6.5 combo team with a victory they failed to play was John Cotey and James Hann, who they most certainly would have lost to.
The other scores from the tournament:
Slatniske/Dicesaro d. Fuller/Groer 8-3
Hajek/Daws d. Cotey/Hann 12-11, sudden death
