Quick wrap-up this week. I’m breaking in a lawnmower. Shit ain’t funny.

65womstandingsThe 6.5 ladies wrapped up a perfect 6-0 season with a 2-1 win over the other Hunter’s Green team. Look at that domination — +5 in lines won, 10 fewer sets lost than anyone, and 43 fewer games lost than anyone.

Yowza! The victory clinches sectionals for the ladies, for the second straight.

They will join the men, who clinched a few weeks ago. The men, however, failed to finish with a perfect regular season record, falling to Tampa Palms.

But still…toast to both teams!

Andy Ritter may have lost a match after leading 5-1 in the second set (cough cough), but his skills at blocking someone’s face in a photo using only a long neck beer bottle is excellent.

In 7.0 mixed action, the Green Machine did what it had to do. Tom and Cherie played another brilliant match at line 1, winning 6-3, 6-3 even though Cherie got off a plane at 3:30 a.m. and still showed up for us.

At line 2, Cotey and Marisa played their first-ever match together, looking great, then crappy, then great again in a 6-1, 5-7, 10-3 win.

At line 3, Erik and Sharon won 6-0, 6-2 and then recruited their fallen foes to join the club. Well done!

The Green Machine has to keep winning. It’s razor close in 7.0, and looks like it will all come down to the Aug. 14 match against first-place BSAC at Hunter’s Green. It’s gonna to be YUUUUGGGGEEEE!!!!

Here are the standings (Don’t worry about West Meadows, they lose all the tiebreakers):

And in 7.5 combo action, Hajek and Slatniske teamed up with some 4.0s to post wins at lines 1 and 3.

The 7.5 team could be headed to sectionals, which would mean back-to-back weekends in Lake Nona for Green Machine Tennis Club founders Cotey, Hajek and Slatniske. That sounds like fun, until you consider it’s Lake Nona, which doesn’t even come up on TripAdvisor, making it harder to make fun of.

The 7.5 team is halfway done, and at 4-0, with the next nearest team already having two losses, looks pretty solid.

Remember folks, get with your 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 captains, because the paperwork for the 0ver-18 team seasons just went out.

About johncotey

John was a sportswriter and columnist for the St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay Times for 25 years, before being pushed from the Titantic, and hopes all of you non-subscribers are happy reading your free news on the internets while his journalism brethren suffer. Not that he's not bitter or anything. His real true joys, however, are his wife, kids and tennis, though not necessarily in that order. Unless his wife is reading this. Then DEFINITELY in that order.
